"Because that which is
known about God is evident within them, for
God made it evident to them. For since the
creation
of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature
have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made,
so that they are without excuse."
Since the Word encourages
us to look at the creation - nature - for a basic understanding of who
God is, Roberts accepts the natural record as truth, just as he takes the
written record to be truth. He believes truth is real and objective, contrary
to popular post-modernist philosophies. He suggests both the Word and Nature
require proper understanding to develop a complete knowledge of God. "Just
as our understanding of the Bible can improve our appreciation of the purposes
and plans behind nature, so understanding nature can help us appreciate
Biblical statements concerning nature and God."
Differences exist in how to understand both Nature and the Bible, especially in questions relating to the age of creation. While Roberts is a scientist and conservative Christian who believes in creation, he makes plain that he is not promoting what is generally referred to as "creation science" or "creationism." Roberts adheres to standard science methods and data to evaluate the natural record, instead of getting sidetracked by pre-scientific timelines and dubious hypotheses such as flood geology. However, he also finds some of the standard conclusions and naturalistic biases of science to be singularly unconvincing in face of the data. He applies conservative principles of interpretation to evaluate the written record of the Bible and believes the Bible is God's inspired and infallible word. The study of Christian Apologetics seeks to reconcile any perceived differences in these two records, while using the harmony between the Bible and Nature as powerful evidence that Nature was created by God and that the Bible reveals the will of the Creator-God. The goal of our "Lord I Believe" effort is to show that a rational basis for these beliefs exist and provide a better harmony of the facts than an unbelieving worldview. The five basic tools Roberts has developed in his studies as a physicist and Christian are explained in the "Lord, I Believe" studies.
"We present rational alternatives to some traditional dogmas, dogmas which the person well versed in natural history may have previously found difficult to reconcile with facts of nature and their faith. However, we do not insist on any particular viewpoint concerning the age of the universe and the earth as a article of the Christian faith since the Bible does not give an age of the universe or earth. For that kind of information we will have to look to the natural record. We believe this is the most honest way to deal with the revelations of God in nature and in the Bible. We emphasize Romans 1:19-20 as authorizing such an approach that seeks the harmony of the natural and written revelations."
We are frequently asked for a "Statement of Faith" by other apologetic ministries. We in Lord, I Believe are individuals, individually responsible to God for our statment of faith. As such we have no collective creed independent from our individual faiths. I strongly resist the formulation of all human creeds which have only led to the division of the body of Christ as if it were a Solomonic baby. I can give the statement I affirmed when I was baptized into Christ. "Jesus Christ is the Son of God, my Savior and my Lord, in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit." My "statement of faith" is simply the New Testament of Jesus Christ. My intent is to allow that word of God to lead my life in the footprints of Jesus until the end of my life here - The Imitation of Christ. My hope is life eternal in Jesus Christ, and for you as well. I take the New Testament as the standard for all matters of faith in Jesus Christ. I take the entire Bible as God's schoolmaster in the nature of God to bring us to Christ. I teach the gospel as the cross and resurrection of Jesus Christ through whom all can have forgiveness of sin and hope of eternal life -- in Him. I believe the Bible is the inspired word of God and profitable for reproof, correction and instruction in righteousness. I believe the creation evidences God's power and divine nature to all humanity, who are thereby held accountable for knowing God. "Seek and ye shall find" is a promise of God to all mankind regardless of where they are in their knowledge of God. Eternal life is in knowing God and His Son, Jesus Christ, John 17:3.
(This statement is not inspired nor infallible, nor is it to be deemed a doctrinal statement of creed or a basis of fellowship. I intend for my only creed to be Jesus. Please consider this a personal statement of confession in the spirit of Romans 10:9. For a statement from the others involved, you shall have to ask them.) Hill Roberts
